Pablo Bush Romero, a Mexican Businessman, came to Akumal in 1958, heading a CEDAM diving expedition to the "Matancero." it was called the "Woolworth Wreck," because of the artifacts recovered. It was the first ship discovered coming from Spain (Europe) which had its full cargo of merchandise and not reached port. Mr. Bush saw the possibilities for developing the cost to tourism. He named the Quintana Roo Coastline "The Mexican Caribbean" and the "Diving Capital of the World". His development in Akumal was the first on the coastline and he had been awarded the Presidential Gold Medal for opening the coast of Quintana Roo to tourism. Akumal is also the birth place for CEDAM INTERNATIONAL, a non-profit organization for diving and underwater archeology enthusiasts. The Bush Family continues to operate the property and they have taken on the very important responsibility of conserving Akumal in its natural state to avoid overdevelopment, and to focus on the community and environment as Akumal's greatest asset
